Hi, I’m Makena and I double major in HDFS and Art. I’m especially interested in parenting and childhood development, but my ultimate goal is to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I want to help families build healthier dynamics and create safe, nurturing environments for children.
I grew up in Hawaiʻi, where the ocean was a central part of my life. I worked on a snorkel boat as a tour guide and naturalist, sharing my love for marine life and the island itself. I moved to Colorado in search of more financial stability and opportunity. It was a big step away from home but I knew that it could help me build a more secure future. I plan to return home eventually, once I’ve established myself in my career and feel ready to give back to my community in a meaningful way.
I started college at 24 after spending a few years working and figuring out the direction I wanted to take. Transferring to CSU felt like the right move. The HDFS program aligned perfectly with my goals. The ALVS, in particular, played a big role in helping me feel like I belonged here. I work with ALVS because I know how powerful that sense of belonging can be and want to support others who are returning to school later in life.
Outside of school, I love being outdoors and hanging out with my mini dachshund, Murphy! I love painting, paper mache, crochet, sculpting, video editing, and basically anything else creative. I can also tell you just about anything you’d want to know about humpback whales; so, if you ever want to make some art and talk whales, I’ve got you covered.
